GRE词汇中的熟词僻义

众所周知GRE考试的词汇难度比较大，往往是我们考生最头疼的部分。词汇除了晦涩难懂和长度惊人以外，更是有很多看似简单，但是真正用到题目里，却远不是我们所熟悉的意思的单词，即“熟词僻义”。

GRE考试中经常出现熟词僻义这类考点,例如：

betray是“背叛”，也可以是“表现”，甚至还可以是“泄密”；

given是“考虑到”，也可以是“习惯于”，甚至还可以是“规定的”；

composed是“冷静的”，也可以是“组成”，甚至还可以是“作曲”；

Secure是“安全”，也可以是“束缚”，甚至还可以是“获得”。

我们一起来看下这类让我们分裂的熟词僻义在真题中是如何运用的吧！

Hew

hew有以下几个常考意思：

（1）to cut down by blows of an ax砍，劈

例：hew trees砍树

（2）conform, adhere 遵守

例：hew to tradition遵守传统

Many scholars have argued that the United States Supreme Court usually (i) ＿＿＿ public opinion in its decisions because it fears that it will (ii) ＿＿＿ if does not; when it does depart from public opinion, it whips up political maelstroms.

解题思路

思路：

首先分号后说when it does depart from public opinion, it whips up political maelstroms 说当最高法远离民声，会激起政治混乱。

其次考点词because因果逻辑取同，因为it（指的最高法）害怕如果不做的话最高法会怎样公众的意见，所以联立后如果不服从大众的观点，大众就不会支持政府，选 D ；所以一空就是说明政府是服从了大众的观点，第一空选 B 选项。

参考翻译：很多学者都针对，美国最高法院经常坚守公众的观点是因为它畏惧如果它不这样做将失去公众的支持。当它离开公众舆论，它将激起政治漩涡。

 Provoke

（1） to incite to anger挑衅；

（2）to call forth (a feeling, an action, etc.)引起思考或感情

The maps in this volume are meant not as guides but as ＿＿＿ : they are designed to make the reader think anew about the city.

解题思路

思路：

考点词冒号：空格在前，答案在后，后面说they are designed to make the reader think anew about the city 对应空格，正确选项 是 D 选项。provocation 引起，刺激。注意这里的 provocation 是没用考察挑衅的意思。

参考翻译：在画卷中的地图并不是为了指引人们，而是为激起人们一些东西。它被创造来让人们重新认识这座城市。

Spell 

Spell它看似简单，但在GRE填空中常考以下意思：

 1）a period spent in a job or occupation一段时间

2）a spoken word or form of words held to have magic power咒语

The breathing spell provided by the ＿＿＿ arms shipments should give all the combatants a chance to reevaluate their positions.

解题思路

思路：

首先根据考点词by可知考查目的方式取同，空格在后，答案线索去前面找。

我们不难发现空格和breathing spell取同，注意这里的spell是一段时间的意思，指的是喘息机会，所以空格应该选择一个时间比较短暂的词语，答案选B moratorium on暂停，停顿。

参考翻译：武器运输的（停顿）所带来的短暂的喘息时机，可以给所有的参战者一个机会来重新评估他们的处境。
